Molto del lavoro di Susanne Bürner è sugli spazi vuoti, sugli spazi fuori dalla cornice principale che costituiscono la parte superflua di una proiezione, per il protagonista dei video così come per gli spettatori, per le loro emozioni ed esperienze. Alcuni dei suoi video sono su gruppi di persone la cui attenzione è focalizzata su qualcosa che è fuori da loro stessi, qualcosa che, allo stesso tempo, resta invisibile allo spettatore. Già nel video finistère (2005) il soggetto sono i fans. Ma il gruppo di spettatori è isolato dal contesto originale ed è posto su uno sfondo neutro. Così l’attenzione dello spettatore del video è focalizzata sugli ammiratori, solitamente marginali nella sua percezione, che esprimono, attraverso mimica e gestualità, le loro forti aspettative e la loro proiezione nella star. Allo stesso tempo lo spettatore del video si trova esso stesso in una posizione di aspettativa, diventando così un doppio del fan. Susanne Bürner tenta di approfondire proprio l’aspetto che riguarda la definizione di una persona attraverso il suo riflesso negli altri. Il video in mostra 50 000 000 CAN’T BE WRONG ripropone il tema dei fans ma pone l’enfasi sulla relazione tra la star e i suoi ammiratori concentrandosi su una singola “superstar”. Ma l’oggetto del loro desiderio rimane invisibile. Alcune volte l’artista cancella digitalmente tracce di elementi che si riferiscono direttamente alla star. I cartelloni con i messaggi e le scritte degli ammiratori appaiono vuoti. Il soggetto reale del video rimane invisibile, si può percepire solo attraverso la reazione dei suoi “seguaci” ed è riflesso nelle espressioni di desiderio dei loro volti che attraversano diversi decenni del secolo scorso.

Much of Susanne Bürner’s work is about empty spaces, the spaces outside of the main frame that constitute the unessential part of a video, both for the protagonist and for the spectators and their emotions and experiences. Some of her videos are about groups of people whose attention is focused on something which is outside of themselves and, at the same time, not visible to the spectator. Her earlier video finistère (2005) is about “fans”. Here, the group of spectators is isolated and placed against a neutral background. The attention of the spectator is thus focused on the fans themselves, who are usually an accessory element. Through their facial expressions and gestures, the fans show their high expectations and their identification with the performing star. At the same time, the spectators of the video have their own expectations, and thus become doubles of the fans. Bürner strives to explore how people define themselves through their reflection in others. The video on display, 50 000 000 CAN’T BE WRONG, also has a group of fans as its subject, but this time places the stress on the relationship between the star and the fans by concentrating on a single superstar. However, the object of their desire is invisible. At some points the artist digitally erased the traces referring to the star. The signs carried by the fans are blank. The actual subject of the video remains invisible, it can only be perceived through the reaction of the public, and is reflected in the ardent expressions on the faces of fans in images spanning several decades of the last century.
